  Photographed at Smythe Lake during golden hour using a Canon 1DX with a 500mm f/4 IS lens. Amid a mosquito outbreak—6,968 bites endured—I waited for hours without a hide. I observed a pelican lifting aquatic plants in beautiful backlight. I chose this bird for its graceful movements and how the early light highlighted its interaction with the environment.
